What are invasive plants?
Everyone loves beautiful plants. Flowers and shrubs adorn our gardens, homes, parks and public spaces. Canadians spend countless hours improving the sensory landscape around their homes, institutions and schools. And many plants attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife seeking food and shelter.

Controlling invasive plants and pests

By Plant Health Unit, Food Safety & Quality Branch, BC Ministry of Agriculture & Lands

The volume and speed at which people and trade goods move between and within countries continues to increase every year. With this movement comes the increased risk that unwanted plants and plant pests, referred to as invasive alien species, will also tag along. Every year at least two new alien pests establish in North America. Canada thistle, which was actually introduced from Eurasia, causes crop losses of over $3.6 million every year.

It’s no small problem. From top to bottom, our province is being overtaken by invasive plants and weeds, robbing us of irreplaceable native plants and destroying ecosystems.

By Peter Symcox

Mention the word “invasive” and most gardeners will throw up their hands and declare that they want nothing to do with any plant that shows that unfortunate characteristic. However, as with anything else, one can always turn a problem to one’s advantage if one goes about things the right way – or so I have found.

Purple Loosestrife
When gardeners get together and discuss the Marsh Monster and the Beautiful Killer, they are not talking about the latest horror movie doing the circuit. Chances are they are discussing how to get rid of purple loosestrife, a pesky – but beautiful – plant.
This weed with the tightly clustered pink-purple flowers still grows in many urban gardens, and is still causing trouble in Canada’s wetlands.
