Using dolomite as mulch
I would appreciate your comments on the idea of adding dolomite to the surface of the ground where I am thinking of planting a field of lavender. I want to reduce acidity in the soil, provide a reflective groundcover to raise summer temperatures around the lavender plants, improve drainage (south-facing slope) and deter weeds from growing.

A layer of mulch will benefit your garden by suppressing weed growth, reducing the need for water and adding organic matter to the soil. When winter comes, it is also a protective barrier against heavy rain. These specially formulated mulch recipes will do all this and provide many of the special nutritional needs of each part of your garden.

Mulch: a garden miracle

By Carol Pope

Sometimes I really miss the obvious.

For years, I piled grass clippings and raked-up leaves in one corner of our yard while struggling to fight back weeds overtaking the garden in another. Finally the light dawned and I began to redistribute the piles of waste onto the beds as mulch.

Now the garden is gaining a lovely sense of order with all the yard waste being recycled into a barrier that adds nutrients to the soil and protects it from invading weeds, erosion, frost and summer drought.
