The idea behind companion planting is that some plants protect and enhance the performance of other plants when grown together. Two such "garden friends" are garlic and fruit trees.

Grow Gourmet Garlic in a Container

By Sheena Adams

Garlic is a staple in any herb or kitchen garden, but not everyone knows that you can grow it in a container. While any type of container will do, as long as it drains well and is a minimum size of 25 x 25 cm (10 x 10 in.), I prefer Italian terra cotta, as it gets nice and warm in the summer sun and provides excellent air exchange for the developing bulbs.

Maximizing Root Vegetable Crops

By Sheena Adams

The mystery of how underground growers, rich in minerals and vitamins, low in calories and high in fibre, are developing below the soil keeps gardeners in suspense.
Root crops require a sandier soil and less manure than top crops. You might wish to divide your garden into two distinct full-sun areas, root crops and top crops, and develop these sections for the specific soil needs of each. Rotate your underground crops within your underground crop area yearly to prevent the spread of disease.
