If you want to provide your cat with a treat, plant Nepeta cataria (catnip) and watch your pet chomp on the leaves and have a good frolic on the plant.

In fact, some gardeners grow their catnip under an overturned wire hanging basket to protect the crown from devastation.

This perennial herb is hardy to zone 3 and thrives in a wide range of soil pH. It is rich in essential oils, giving it a mint-like fragrance.

Catnip is a vigorous grower, so keep it well mannered by growing it in dry, lean soil. It is drought tolerant and deer resistant and makes a beautiful addition to perennial borders and mixed beds.
