Travelling herbs

A modest assortment of kitchen herbs can travel with you to the cabin, boat, or wherever you prepare summer meals.

In spring, pot up a few extra herbs for zing in salads and pasta - how about an extra one for the neighbours? Recycled newspaper pots about 15 cm (6 in.) deep and about the size of a large loaf of bread are perfect, or use shallow round plastic "bulb" pots. One cardboard box or sturdy plant tray makes transport easy.

It's best to combine annuals/biennials that prefer evenly moist, fertile soil in one container: basil, chervil, cilantro, marjoram, parsley. Woody perennials such as rosemary, sage and thyme prefer lean, sandy soil on the dry side and may be tucked in together.
