Which tomato type is right for you?

Bush or determinate varieties are great for containers. They will stop growing as soon as the fruit sets and will produce fruits one time only. They grow best when left unpruned. Place a tomato cage over the plant before it grows to provide air circulation, light penetration and plant support as the fruit becomes heavy.

Vine tomatoes or indeterminate varieties will grow continuously all season in a long vine and will produce fruit repeatedly in the leaf axils (where the leaf stalk joins the stem) along the vine until frost. They will need good support and space to grow. Vine tomatoes generally have more light and air circulation than bush varieties and will dry more quickly so use moisture-preserving mulch. If you are looking for higher yields and can afford the space, this may be the type for you.
