Over winter the leaves have composted in their pile. Now, as the soil starts to warm and the first perennials begin to pop out of the ground, it's time to mulch.

The nutrients will help nourish your plants and the mulch will break down and add texture to the soil. This mulch is useful for all perennials, both shade and sun lovers:

500 mL (2 cups) alfalfa meal
500 mL (2 cups) green sand
250 mL (1 cup) rock phosphate
1 wheelbarrow of leaf mould finely shredded with a mower

Mix and apply a 7-cm (3-in.) layer around all perennials.
