Mystery hebes

Although it is commonly mistaken for a perennial, this evergreen shrub shares few similarities with that category.

A native of New Zealand, the majority of Hebe varieties (over 20) cannot tolerate extremely cold temperatures. In Canada, for the most part you'll only find Hebe on the south coast and islands of British Columbia, as this shrub likes the cool coastal climate and can tolerate sea winds and salt air.

All Hebe varieties bloom between the months of May and August with pruning to be completed shortly after blooming. Each variety blooms in its own distinctive colour, usually white through deep purple along the stem of the plant.

Hebe prefers a mostly sunny location with a soil that must drain well. It is also often grown in containers, in rockeries or as bonsai.

Look for it throughout the spring season at your local garden centre.
