I have a dear friend turning 60 and would like to send a plant for her garden in West Vancouver or their summer place in Courtenay. Would you be able to tell me a plant that would be suitable?

David Tarrant, Gardening expert

I suggest Phygelius aequalis, a perennial from South Africa, which is hardy both in the Lower Mainland and in Courtenay. It has many gorgeous stems of red or yellow tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds to the garden.

Any larger garden centre should carry it.
